ROAD FATALITIES A MASSIVE DRAIN ON ECONOMY

KZN finance MEC Ina Cronje paid tribute to emergency crews, police, medical professionals and SADD for their work to prevent deaths and injuries on the road.

Speaking at function to commemorate The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, she said with more than 14 000 killed, more than 130 000 injured, and 8 000 people paralysed in road crashes this year, the country simply cannot afford the cost to the economy. “These accidents come at an enormous cost to the health system, insurance industry and business, amounts to about ZAR306 billion annually,” she said. She urged all concerned to do what they can to prevent senseless crashes, and adopt a proactive stance to road safety.
