Gathering, Vigil,

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR)

We are setting out 406 pairs of shoes to signify the number of deaths in Oregon in 2016 and drawing the footprints of the predicted number of deaths by the end of the year. We will have a press conference with representatives from our fire department and from our metro trauma team for us to thank for their service.

These shoes represent the 400+ people killed on the streets of Oregon this year. Families of victims share their stories.

Thank you to all who donated shoes. We donated about 50 to Dress for Success, 100 women’s and children’s to Rose Haven, 100 men’s to Street Roots, and the rest to a homeless shelter whose name I can’t recall! There were very few unusable shoes. Some were excellent! It was gratifying and humbling to see the appreciation at Street Roots, where some men were picking the shoes they wanted before I even got them in the building…

Because of the unfortunate caption below, the coverage of our event to memorialize all people killed using every mode of transportation on our roads inspired a frenzy of comments about the irresponsibility and lawlessness of people walking and biking. For a quick eye-opener, one just needs to read the state police press releases about the multitude of people driving who veer into oncoming traffic or drift off the road due to: “an unknown reason,” “suspected alcohol use,” “distraction appears to be a factor,” “excessive speed.”
