The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was commemorated at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering, in Belgrade, Serbia, on 16 November, 2013.

This year’s event has been organized by the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering from Belgrade, Faculty of Technical Sciences from Novi Sad, Academy for Criminal and Police Studies, and gathered numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations, such as Traffic Police Administration and Emergency Management Sector of the Serbian Ministry of Interior, Auto-Moto Association of Serbia, Road Safety Agency, Red Cross of Serbia, Institute for Blood Transfusion, City Institute for Public Health, Traffic Safety Committee, Road Safety Association, Traffic Safety and Media, Traffic Safety Group, etc.

A part of the event was dedicated to the presentation of the WHO Manual for Prevention of Road Traffic Injuries. Also, policemen, firefighters, Red Cross volunteers, emergency medical services and students were all part of a demonstration that showcased a procedure in case of a road crash. A blood transfusion bus was also available for those who wanted to donate blood.

More than 200 participants of the event signed a Declaration on Road Safety, thus sending a message that aims at raising awareness of the importance of road safety and obligation and possibilities to reduce the consequences of accidents by taking appropriate sets of measures and actions. Road traffic injuries, as the leading cause of violent death, can be predicted and prevented, which was another message from this gathering.

The Auto-Moto Association of Serbia, as one of the leading road safety stakeholder contributing pro-actively to the improvement of the level of road safety in Serbia through numerous activities and prevention measures, also played an active role at this event. By using own financial and human resources, the national motoring association has been committed to road safety activities, among which the most effective are the 44 year long children traffic education contest, safety helmet campaign, free technical inspections of vehicles, road inspections and coding for safer road infrastructures, etc.

AMSS hopes that the entire professional community, all institutions and individual road users will make extra efforts in improving significantly the level of road safety in Serbia in the future. This is due to the fact that the figure of 521 fatalities recorded in the first ten months of 2013, accompanied by 15,375 serious and slight injuries, is still alarming and requires adequate actions by the whole Serbian community.
