On November 21, 2013 a special commemorative meeting was held in the underground parking of the “28 mall” in Baku, the capital, in order to join the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDOR) world events. The event was organized by the Public Health and Reforms Center of Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan Republic and Creative Youth Association “ADDIM”, local NGO. The representatives of the Ministry of Education, State Traffic Police Department, Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society and mass media took part in the event. After a minute silence to remember road accident victims the director of the Public Health and Reforms Center Dr. Jeyhun Mammadov took the floor.
r. Mammadov presented his condolences to families and friends of the victims and stressed that the main point of the event was to attract public attention to road safety problems. He mentioned that it is possible to prevent traffic accidents and that depends on all of us and called all participants to support state programs for road safety improvement.
The president of “ADDIM”, Huseyn Javadzade, said that traffic accidents affect all areas of society life and it is important to struggle together to solve this problem.
In his speech the Head of Population Health Department of the Public Health and Reforms Center, a National Coordinator of the Decade of Action for Road Safety in Azerbaijan Dr. Tofig Musayev reminded that every year millions of people tragically die in traffic accidents: “Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death globally for children and youth aged between 10 to 24 years and kill 400,000 young people every year. Time is never found again but looking forward we can save millions of lives together”.
The Head of Public Relations Department of the State Traffic Police of Baku city, Vagif Asadov, the Head of Health and Care Department of Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Dr. Matanat Garakhanova and the Head of Education and Extra-school institutions department of the Ministry of Education Agababa Ibrahimov also expressed their opinion on the matter.
The event was followed by a stage performance of teenage girls in police uniform, a display of damaged cars installation, video clips, distribution of “Ten facts about road safety and youth” booklet and other educational materials (posters, stickers) and performance of the Eurovision song contest 2011 winner Eldar Gasimov.
