WHY:
There’s a particular kind of grief that too often goes unspoken and unacknowledged — that is, the grief that accompanies the death of a loved one through road traffic crashes, and the turmoil that is caused by a life-altering road traffic injury. On average, 35,000-40,000 people die due to road crashes in the U.S. — every year. And another 2.5 million people suffer crash injuries. These figures aren’t just tragic, they’re unconscionable. How do we, as a society, accept this loss of life, and the millions of lives forever changed? Our collective inattention, or nonchalance, about these tragic deaths and injuries — all the more tragic because they could have been prevented — makes it even harder for survivors to fully feel their grief, or get the full support they’re due. This event represents one small step in the direction of bringing greater awareness and community support to those who’ve been impacted.

WHAT:
A community gathering to remember and honor the friends, family, and community members, who’ve been impacted by road traffic crashes — including those whose lives have been lost, and those whose lives have been forever altered due to serious injury. This free afternoon event will include complimentary snacks and beverages, a short program, a chance to share testimonials, a simple ceremony where individuals will be invited to add their loved ones’ names to a collaborative community sculpture.

WHO:
If you or a member of your community has been impacted by traffic violence, we welcome you to this space for a community moment of healing and remembrance.

If you are interested in learning more information about an ongoing healing circle or other support, please contact clara@seattlegreenways.org.
