World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
Sunday 16 November 2014
Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU)
Curepipe
MauritiusTo mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, this year the BKWSU of Curepipe has organised an exhibition on ‘Road Safety through Self-Transformation’ from 10 00 to 16 00 followed by collective meditation from 16 00 to 17 00.
The programme of the day was comprised of the following:
• guided tour at the exhibition
• meditation
• signing of pledge
• distribution of bookmarks and stickers on road safety
• writing of opinions
• interviews of affected families, Representative of the Police Force, Eminent personalities and
• Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) coverage – (Mr Ben Buntipilly, Special Advisor on Road Safety matters at the Road Safety Unit of the Prime Minister’s Office and BK Geeta, Coordinator of the BKWSU, Curepipe, were interviewed).
People from all walks of life visited the exhibition and spent some moments in meditation cum reflection to pay tribute to those who were victims of road accidents and also remembering their families and all those who were affected by such tragic incidents.
The aim of the exhibition was to raise awareness on road safety. Many visitors, including children, parents, eminent personalities, Councillors of Curepipe, police officers and many others expressed their gratitude for such an initiative, empowering them with all spiritual skills, positive thoughts and the necessary precautions that an individual must take to avoid accidents, thus valuing one’s life.
Special one hour meditation from 16 00 -17 00 was dedicated to all the victims of road accidents. People present were guided with live meditation commentaries and light music. They felt empowered, relieved from pains and sufferings in a very cool and calm atmosphere of the centre, as an oasis of peace. This experimentation with meditation helped them to create good wishes and pure feelings for everyone.
Sister Geeta, Centre Coordinator, explored the benefits of meditation to create a cool, calm and stable state of mind which are essential for drivers to take the right decision at the right time to ensure their safety and that of road users.
Mr Ben Buntipilly, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Road Safety, said “ I am overwhelmed with expectations and hope that through meditation the channelling of information and change will take place. Be it whatever equipment whatever technologies we introduce, if the mindset is not changed nothing will change. So I will pay tributes to the Brahma Kumaris who are striving very hard to inculcate this methodology and this approach of meditation. Many activities have been carried in Mauritius in relation to Road Safety and to enhance Road Safety. My hope my wish is to have this component of meditation in the process of obtaining a driving license which is a very very essential part of learning, assessment, monitoring and coaching.”
The Deputy Social Welfare Commissioner, Mr Dinesh Soobah said “ I feel very honoured to be here, it has changed my mindset. As from today I will be another driver in my car driving calmly passionately with pleasure. I will enjoy my drive.”
Those who visited the exhibition wrote:
“A very interesting and enriching exhibition, should be shared in different regions.” D. Soobah,
Deputy Social Welfare Commissioner.
(He decided to bring this exhibition on Road Safety all over the island in all the Social Welfare Centres.)
“Nice expose by BK Pradeep. Indeed very helpful. Made me realise simple things which I would neglect otherwise but which are important and helpful while on the road. Thank you for the nice experience.” S P Gookool. Senior Lab Technician.
Mrs Namrata Sewgobind, Educator related her experience about the sudden death of her father who was a Chief Inspector in the Police Force, some six years back. By nature he was a very disciplined officer in his profession. He was going to attend a function on his motorbike when he was badly kicked by a van. The only mistake he made is that he did not tie his helmet. The whole family was severely affected. However, her faith in God and practice of meditation have helped her and her family to overcome such hardship. She therefore made an appeal to everyone: ‘tie your helmet and save your life”.
