Ukraine, 17th November 2013
On November 17th, our NGO “Ukrainian Road Safety Association” conducted a series of actions dedicated to the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, held within the Ukrainian Road Safety Week, which was held for the fifth time in the third week of November on the eve of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
This year, the Ukrainian Road Safety Week was held under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
To commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, the following events were held:
1) Meeting of the URSA leaders with the representatives of the Administration of the President of Ukraine on declaring the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims the official day in Ukraine.
2) Memorial services for road crash victims in the religious institutions of Ukraine
As in previous years, the NGO “Ukrainian Road Safety Association” appealed to the religious organizations of Ukraine to conduct a memorial service for road victims on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
Representatives of the URSA joined the memorial services held at the Holy Dormition Cathedral of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Kiev), the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ (Kiev) and the Cathedral of St. George (Lviv).

Memorial services were also held at the request of the State Automobile Inspection in the regiment of SAI Kiev and in churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at the National Academy of Internal Affairs.
3) International basketball tournament in memory of a famous sportsman, European champion in basketball, master of sports of international class – Sergei Konenko, who was tragically killed in a car crash.

4) Placement of posters of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on municipal boards in Kiev.
5) Auto clubs commemorated those killed in road accidents
Drivers of passenger cars (and the majority of them were members of the NGO “All-Ukrainian BMW Fan Club”) commemorated those tragically killed in road accidents.
The drivers lit candles in memory of road crash victims and put them next to flowers.At the initiative of the “Avtoradio” (Media Partner of the Road Safety Week), at 13:30 the car clubs members have pressed the horns of their cars, paying tribute to those killed in road accidents.
6) On the eve of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, the Lviv regional radio (Partner of the Road Safety Week)held a direct radio broadcast with priests – Father Igor Petsyukha, spiritual director of the Ukrainian Catholic University and Father Andrew Khomyshyn, military chaplain of the St.Peter and St.Paul’s Church. The priests raised the issue of responsibility on the road, noting that on a wheel of a car whose driver does not speed and follows the traffic rules, sits an Angel who keeps the driver and the passengers safe.
7) At Freedom Square in Kharkiv – one of the largest squares in Europe –
a commemoration ceremony for road victims was held.
The organizer of the event was the Kharkov National Automobile and Highway University with the support of the State Automobile Inspection MIA of Ukraine and the Motorist Union. Participants of the action paid tribute to victims by holding a minute of silence, as well as a walk simulating a counter flow traffic with lighted candles, as well as handed out commemorative postcards “How to avoid becoming a victim of a road accident”.
8) Students of the leading universities of Donetsk gathered at the mourning meeting held near the “Donetsk Academy of Motor Transport”.
Priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church held a memorial service for all the victims of road accidents, while the mourning youth lit candles and prayed for the repose of those killed in accidents.
9) More than 3.000 participants gathered to support the concert “We are for road safety”.
The audience was called to observe a moment of silence for those killed in road accidents. All the participants switched on the screens of their mobile phones, while the metronome counted mournful seconds and a burning candle of memory was shown on a large screen.
