PROGRAMME OF EVENTS IN PORTUGAL

Following Estrada Viva’s practice of rotating the National Celebration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, this year the main celebrations will take place in the city of Viseu.

November 17, Sunday, Viseu

10:00 – Concentration at the Town Hall – Praca do Municipio

10:30 – Welcoming Session to all participants by the Mayor of Viseu – in the Town Hall

With the intervention of representatives of the organizing institutions

11:00 – Tour of the city for a collective tribute to victims – Departure from the Town Hall, organized by: Viseu 2001, Group Azuribike, Viseu Motoclube.

Deposition of flowers in memory of and to honour the road victims of Viseu.

Return to the Town Hall at 12:30

During the morning (11h -13h ) – Street Memorial honoring all the road victims  in Portugal in 2013 – initiative “One fatality, one flower”.

Deposition of flowers representing the 417 fatalities of 2013 (31 January to October this year) in Viseu’s city center, next to the Town Hall and Cathedral of Viseu

The flowers will be identified with a small card, and the gardens and public spaces will display banners and posters of the Remembrance Day celebration.

14:30 – Memorial to the victims in Viseu Cathedral

Construction of a memorial at the entrance of the Cathedral (interior and exterior), lighting candles by victims’ relatives, adhering to the international Light of Hope initiative

15:00 – Mass in honour of the victims, and performance of the Mozart Choir, in Viseu’s Cathedral. The eucharist will be officiated by the Bishop of Viseu, D. Ilidio Leandro Pinto.

15:45 – A minute of silence for the world’s road victims and sending off of balloons at the Largo da Sé, in front of Viseu’s Town Hall.

I’m glad to tell you that the WDOR celebrations in Portugal were a big success!
We had more people participating and also more media attention than last year.

There were more celebrations than the ones organized directly by Estrada viva – for instance in Beja (Alentejo, south Portugal), there were celebrations organized by a local moto-club. Therefore, we know so far of celebrations in Viseu, Évora, Vila Real and Beja.
