Greece, Athens, Gathering, 18th November 2012

Our Greek association “SOS Road Crimes” (SOS Τροχαία Εγκλήματα– SOSTE) will also be part of the “Light of Hope Initiative”.
We’ve already linked  the new WDR website from our blog with a side widget and also had a post about it.

We’ve decided that on Sunday 18th November all our members will be in Constitution (Syntagma) Square in front of the Greek Parliament (from 16.00 to 19.00).  We are also calling all citizens through social media to join the action.
Lighting candles will form the number of human losses every year due to road crimes.

We will also have pictures of our beloved who are not anymore with us, accompanied by the chronicles of their road crash.

We’ve been in contact with the Athenian cycling community and they’re organizing a “ride of silence” which will end up in Constitution Square – where we will be – in order to pay respects to road victims among the cycling community.

There are also events in Chania – Crete and in Ioannina (by cyclists a “black ride” around the local lake)

In four Greek cities there are plans for a “black ride” on World Day.

Our organisation “You Are What U Do – Kostas Kouvidis” participates in SOSTE

Report of the SOSTE event held at Syntagma Square

SOSTE / SOS Road Crimes Greece

We would like to inform you about our actions on the World Day of Remembrance in Athens.

Following FEVR’s suggestion, we held our event in Constitution Square (Syntagma Square) in Athens, in front of the Greek Parliament. Pictures of road crash victims were put in a noticeable position and candles were lit in the shape of the flower of remembrance. Also dancers carried out a performance for road traffic victims. Holding boxes in the colours of traffic lights, it was an event in silence presenting in abstract manner the harmonious coexistence of people in the street.

Also Athenian cyclists arrived in Syntagma square, after a cycle ride in memory of cycling victims, and they also lay down in front of the Greek Parliament, imitating road traffic victims. In addition, after communicating with cycling communities all over Greece, rides of silence were also held in 15 different Greek cities and islands  – Ioannina, Corfu, Komotini, Alexandroupoli, Florina, Thessaloniki, Katerini, Igoumenitsa, Patras, Amaliada, Kalamata, Drama, Larisa, Irakleio and Hania. We are sending you pictures – feel free to use them on the World Day website.

Our event was held with great success: more than 500 people attended and more than 1.500 flyers were distributed to people passing by. Unfortunately media coverage was limited, although we had sent invitations to many journalists. Economic crisis is considered to be much more important by Greek press and media than people’s lives, but the use of social media helped us make the event known to the general public.
