“World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims”
Congress “Traffic accidents involving children; Causes – consequences – prevention”
Germany, Muenster, VOD & GUVU, 17-18 November 2015
To mark the World Day of Remembrance 2015, the German federation for road traffic victims – Verkehrsunfall-Opferhilfe Deutschland (VOD) and the Association for research of road crash causation – Gesellschaft fuer Ursachenforschung bei Verkehrsunfaellen (GUVU) – are holding a Conference entitled “Child casualties in road traffic”.
This conference, which is also supported by Aktion Kinderunfallhilfe eV, will take place at the German Police University in Muenster, with participation of former Federal Minister Dr Kristina Schroerer.
The German statistic of 2014 shows an increase in the death and serious injuries due to traffic accidents. A highly sad fact in itself, but especially when the victims are children. Traffic accidents involving children make up the saddest chapter of everyday road issues. The consternation not only of parents, family and friends but also of the general population is immense. In recent years a positive development was shown in the numbers of those casualties, when the number or children involved in traffic accidents between 2001 and 2012 decreased by 28%. Nevertheless in 2013, every 19 minutes a child was affected of an accident on German roads. Each of those individual cases is a heavy burden, 58 children died of their injuries. These are exactly 58 too many!
In order to make a positive contribution in the German road safety and particularly for children, the “German Federation of Road Traffic Victims” (Verkehrsunfall-Opferhilfe Deutschland [VOD]) and the “Association for Research on Road Accident Causation ” (Gesellschaft für Ursachenforschung bei Verkehrsunfällen [GUVU]) with the support of the “Accident Support for children” (Aktion Kinderunfallhilfe e.V) hold a congress entitled “Kinderunfälle im Straßenverkehr” (Traffic accidents involving children).
Although the UN- Resolution 60/5 in 2005 already initiated the Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims (with the vote of Germany) media coverage is still lacking. For this reason, the congress is timed very close to the “World day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims”. The event will therefore be advertised accordingly.
At the University of Applied Science for Public Administration of North Rhine-Westphalia (FHÖV NRW) a satellite event will take place, where practical elements of work on road safety will be presented on the previous day (16th November 2015). This event is addressed to all interested people and of course to the media, especially to give photo reporters attractive opportunities for interesting reports.
