Croatia, nationwide, November 2013

This year, the activities of the Association of Families of Road Traffic Victims for the World Day of Remembrance are as follows:

1. On a half page of daily newspapers will be published “In memoriam” for all those who were killed in road crashes.

2. A candle will be lit for each person killed in road crashes in the Republic of Croatia during last year. The candles will be placed in a form of a large heart. In the middle of the heart smaller candles will show the number of deaths. This will take place in Koprivnica on 17th November and Pula on 23rd November (for the national day of remembrance).

3. This year for the first time, the World Day will be marked with a special programme in Croatian prisons, involving perpetrators of traffic crimes.

During the week of WDR, the association will hold interactive workshops in several secondary schools in Croatian cities. The Association will bring several prisoners who will give details about their behavior before the road crash to students of the high school graduation class (those who are just becoming drivers). The prisoners will explain how the road crashes happened and what the consequences of such irresponsible behavior are.
In this way, the students – future drivers – will get a clear message of what is risky behavior in traffic.

The Prison Administration of the Ministry of Justice will hold a workshop and mark the World Day of Remembrance in prisons in Lipovica and Valtura on 22nd November 2013.

4. A Memorial Mass for those who were killed in road traffic crashes will be held in Koprivnica on 17th November. This memorial service, at which poems will also be recited, will be attended by police, ambulance and fire officers.

The events will be covered by the media.

Last year, in the Republic of Croatia, 393 people were killed in road crashes. That number is significantly smaller than in 2008 when our Association joined FEVR, at which time it amounted to 664 persons killed.

Last year’s death toll on Croatian roads was the lowest for the past 40 years, and we believe that our association has made a significant contribution towards saving lives.
